Canada all-time in WCQ

I'm sure some of you have been able to tell already from the content of recent posts, but for the rest of my readers who aren't amateur psychoanalysts, allow me to let you in on a little secret: I'm fucking pumped for the start of qualifying!

Over the past few weeks, I've sifted through Canada's all-time results against Jamaica, Honduras, and Mexico. On a pleasant but uneventful Civic Holiday Monday, I ploughed throw the entirety of Canada's history attempting to qualify for World Cups.

Considering that our team has only been successful once, in 1986, I was expecting a more negative set of results on the whole than I saw. It became clear, though, that Canada was the #2 team in the region for most of the last century, until the USA eclipsed them in the early 90s, and then followed a few disastrous qualifying campaigns where Canada was beaten by the likes of Trinidad and Tobago, and Costa Rica.

I'll give it to you quick and dirty (yes, that's what she said):

If you want to play along at home, you can download this table (.PDF). You may notice three asterisks beside a loss to Australia in Sydney in 1993. These are meant to point out that since the two-legged series was tied on aggregate, they went to penalties and Canada lost, failing to book a ticket to WC '94 in the United States.

I'm worn out from all the tabulation, and don't know enough of the history to make any informed comments anyway. My general impression is that the team has done well when playing in Edmonton, one unfortunate match against T&T excepted. Any other judgments will have to wait.

One story I'm rather interested in is how a qualifier between Canada and the USA on 12 December 1976 came to be played in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. (Canada won 3-0). If anybody can shed any light or informed guesses on that situation, be my guest!

I searched on concacaf.com and it was a playoff. Back then we played our preliminaries in the North Zone with the US and Mexico. That year we all tied on points, Mexico went through on GD, Us and the US tied. Guess they chose Haiti as it was December afterall. Another point was that Haiti was a concacaf powerhouse back then. Look up Emmanuel Sanon, he scored in the world cup against the Italian Dino Zoff.

Now you got me searching old stats. I came across an interesting one. In qualifying for the 1974 world cup, a group made up of Suriname, Antigua and Barbuda and Trinidad & Tobago played various matches in St John's, NFLD. These games were played in November and December. I don't get it.

It seems there's a lot of weird stuff that went on, but I guess it's CONCACAF so we shouldn't be surprised. I can't imagine Suriname, Antigua, and T&T enjoying playing on the rock in December, though. Bizarre!

In terms of Canada's matches, I found it strange that the 1957 qualifying appeared to consist of a home and away series against the USA and Mexico, except both of Canada's matches against Mexico were away.

And thank goodness we don't have a qualifying round consisting of a group of teams playing "neutral site" matches in Mexico (1977) and Honduras (1981).
